Thinking Out Loud Ep 2.1

I'm back!

Remember the square root of 2 in our last episodes? As shown, 2 is a rational number, so square root of 2 is the opposite of a rational number, which is an irrational number.

After rational and irrational numbers, there were indices and powers.

 ______
|            |                   I now have the power to rule the world!
|            |    |
|______|   /
       | ___/
     / |
   /   |
   \   |
     \ |
       |
     /  \
   /      \
  |         |
  |         |

No, not that sort of power, this power!

2^3=8

Later on, there was a huge problem.
   ___
  /  1    = 1
\/
   ____
  /  -1    = ?
\/

People then invented a symbol to substitute the square root of negative 1, which is i, also called imaginary number.

So now, people could do mathematical operations that involves square roots of negative numbers.
   ____         ____
  /  -2    =    /    2       x   i
\/              \/

And after all these years of expansion, is there any more space to expand? The answer is yes. Like the Big Bang, mathematics is constantly expanding gradually everyday. For example, representing the imaginary number as a real number.

This is all for today. Thanks for reading. And remember ...
